Dal is a basic recipe made in daily and its a most comfort food best served with steam rice or roti. This simple dal fry is delicious, tasty and healthy. There are numerous ways a dal can be made. I have used toor dal also known as pigeon peas lentils . You can follow the same recipre with different dals of your choice.

Wash dal in a plenty of water until water runs clear. Add dal , chopped tomatoes ,sliced onions, Garlic cloves , Turmeric powder , Red chili powder , cumin seeds and water altogether , Pressure cook 2-3 whistle . cook until soft and mushy .
Once dal is cooked , then mash dal with a wired whisk or with spoon or with a pestle.
Cook dal in excess and can store in air tight container . Place them in freezer use as desired.
In a pan or kadai , heat oil add mustard seeds when you hear spluttering sound of mustard , add cumin and curry leaves fry them.
Remove tadka in a bowl , add cooked dal , salt and tamarind pulp . Stir and cook till you get a smooth and slightly thick consistency . Dal is usually has a medium to thick consistency making it thin will spoil the taste . Add dal to the tadka bowl , serve with steam rice .
INGREDIENTS :
- 1 cup tuvar dal/ arhar arhar dal/ pigeon pea lentil
- 1 teaspoon red chili powder
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 sliced onion
- 3-4 garlic cloves
- 2 roughly chopped tomatoes
Other ingredients
- Salt as needed
- 1 tablespoon tamarind pulp
For tempering
- 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1-2 strands curry leaves
